My current project, which is nearing completion, is ‘the river runs through it’. The work is situated at Collins Landing in Victoria Harbour adjacent to the new ANZ Centre. The intent of the installation is to reference forms that derive from the original environment, placed over the built form of the city. There are four principle components of the work.
The ‘flow’ is delineated in the shaping of the ground plane, the sweep of different coloured pavers representing the movement of wind and water. The repetition of the white concrete forms represent an abstracted notion of waves, their shapes and surface ripples. The multi-coloured brick mounds represent sand dunes and the planter beds create another element to the dynamic of the space introducing colour and texture.
My intent is to make a sculptural response to a site of physical and built forces and to create a space of dynamic spatial associations and materials. The ‘flow’ and repetition of forms creates a continuous sweep of the sculpture across the upper level of the promenade down and across the grassed area of Collins Landing.
This project is the culmination of a number of ideas I have for how sculpture can work in the public domain. Although I have made many ‘discrete object’ sculptures I see the potential in a public work to engage the viewer in such a way that the sculpture’s boundary is indistinct.
